In this essay, I will explore the reasons why crime may be on the increase and some possible solutions to the problem.
When discussing crime, I think it is important to make a distinction between violent or harmful crimes and those which have no victims, but are regarded as criminal nonetheless. Regarding the first category, the causes are perhaps obvious - a person wants something, such as money, sex or gratification, and feels that society shouldn’t stand in their way of getting it. Therefore, we have such crimes as fraud, robbery, rape and murder committed by people who we could possibly categorise as sociopathic. The second category, however, includes such crimes as recreational drug use, accessing a blocked website in certain countries or purchasing generic medicine from outside their homeland’s borders. In these cases, the crime is decided by a group of people whose interests and belief define the society around them - they believe that all people should live as they do, think like they do and act as they do, and anyone who lives outside of these norms is therefore aberrant and maladjusted. In this case, the makers of the law are clearly sociopathic.
In terms of dealing with these crimes, I believe we should work with J.S Mill’s idea of harm. If an action leads to definite harm of another individual (arson, rape, assault etc) or the theft of a person’s property (fraud, scams, robbery etc), then the criminal must be rehabilitated and taught why their actions were wrong. If they cannot learn to understand why their actions were wrong, then they cannot be a part of society. In the case of victimless crimes, however, the cause lies with selfish and outmoded thinking on the part of the lawmakers themselves. In this case, the lawmakers must be removed and a new, more reasonable set of people instated in their place.
